Sakshi Srikrishna Srinivasa Rao, wife of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been charged with corruption and breach of trust in relation to her role as head of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) External Affairs Committee.
Sources say Srinitasa Rao’s charge sheet is expected to be filed in the Supreme Court soon and she has been remanded in police custody.
Srinivasasan is the daughter of former Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Rao and the sister of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Sources say she has pleaded not guilty and her case is being probed by a special investigative team (SIT).
Sources told The Hindu that Sriniva Rao had not been seen in public since the last two days.
She has been accused of taking a bribe from a businessman who offered to help her in her role in the party.
According to a complaint filed by the Special Investigation Team (Sitaram Yechury), Srinita Rao had taken the bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the businessman in December this year.
She allegedly failed to disclose it in her nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections.
The complaint was filed on her behalf by the Union of India and the Supreme Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
The Sitaram said Srinatasan was asked to come to the party’s office on March 20, where she allegedly took the bribe.
“When she went to the office, she was confronted by her husband and then the police,” the Sitarams lawyer said.
“The police came to know that she had accepted the bribe and asked her to come before them.
She was then taken to the SIT in the presence of the Chief Secretary and the Chief Judicial Magistrates.
She is yet to be charged.”
Sources said Srikashans case has come to light due to a tip-off by an official of the Election Commission of India.
Sources said the ECI was informed by a senior BJP leader that a woman had been taking bribes from the party and that Srikath was a victim of corruption.
Sources said there are currently three other women members of the External Affairs Department.
Sources close to the family said they are currently in negotiations to have Srikaras arrest on corruption charges.
