After a decade of development and development, the world is finally starting to see the next generation of roller skater, the quad roller skate.
The latest version of the skate park in Dubai’s Red Sea is a $300 million development that was designed by the London-based firm R&D Bournemouth.
It’s part of a larger $1 billion effort to expand the industry’s footprint across the globe.
For now, the Dubai skate park is only accessible by car, but that will change in the near future.
“Dubai is definitely the most important market for quad roller skating right now,” said Tony Lees, CEO of R&DD Bournethers, adding that the city is the “capital of quad roller” in terms of traffic.
“We see the demand for the product coming up.”
The company also has plans to create a large indoor skate park on the site of a former naval air base, but for now, Dubai has chosen to keep its skate park private.
“It’s a bit of a gamble for the city, but they’re doing a good job,” said R&Ds CEO, Alain Pérez.
“They have a big skate park, so they’re going to have a lot of people who want to come to Dubai to skate.”
He said that Dubai has already had more than 400,000 skateboarders since it opened its first skate park.
“With this development we’re trying to reach those people,” he said.
R&DJ Bournery is currently in the final stages of finalizing the project, which includes constructing an indoor skatepark.
“The Dubai skatepark is definitely a step in the right direction, but the Dubai team is very confident that it will be successful,” said Lees.
“If it doesn’t, we have the option to take it down.
We can go back to the drawing board.”
The Dubai skate area is a joint venture between the city and Dubai Motor Corporation, which has a significant stake in the project.
RMC has also invested in skate parks around the world, including the Los Angeles skate park where some of the first roller skating is still happening.
According to R&DWB’s Pévez, Dubai Motor is the only company in the world that is “driving the global growth of skateboarding” and has “created a skate park that is both a catalyst for the sport and the first of its kind anywhere in the entire world.”
